I’ve just been named to the Advisory Board of the McGill University Centre for Continuing Education (CCE). For the next two years, I’ll be doing what I can to help grow the centre.
I’m thrilled for a number of reasons.
First of all, I love McGill and am happy to be provided with a chance to give back to the university that gave me so much. I attended the University between 1983 and 1987. It’s at McGill that I did the following:
- I touched my first computer keyboard and typed my first line of code.
- I discovered the joys of singing in a choir and learning that a Bach Chorale can make anyone cry.
- I entered buildings and felt completely overwhelmed by the greatness of the people who had taught and studied there. (I recall getting dizzy and having to sit down after reading a plaque recognizing that Ernest Rutherford, the father of nuclear physics, was appointed as McGill’s chair of physics in 1898. While at McGill, he did the work that led to his 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.)
McGill is a fabulous university. It was rated 20th in the world in the 2008 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Prepare to hear me boast of this often.
I’m a big believer in lifelong learning. University continuing education departments play an important role in society by encouraging people to pursue an academic education in any stage of their lives.
I’ll get a glimpse into how the academic world has changed in the last 25 years:
- What learning technologies has the university embraced?
- What role is social media playing in academia?
- How do students view their education?
I’ll keep you posted on what I learn.

Richard: Congrats… must surely be a proud moment for you. Good Luck !!!
Congratulations Richard! I am also a McGill alumni and remain a big fan of the University. We may have crossed paths as I was there between 86-89! I will look forward to reading about what you learn re: learning technologies being used at my alma mater.
Wow ! I didnt know you sung as well! K
Luckily, singing in a choir allowed my voice to merge with 30 better ones. I did, however, sing a solo in a Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s performance of a Mozart choral work back when I was eight years old. Five years later, my voice changed, definitely not for the better.
Richard, congrats! Excellent news. I am anxious to hear details on your experiences. Does Con-Ed mingle with the Executive Institute at all? My only exposure to McGill has been through the Exec institute (which I have enjoyed).
Joe: Thank you! I have no idea whether CCE and the Executive Institute mingle. One of the CCE board members teaches entrepreneurship, possibly in the Executive Institute.
Richard, congratulations. I have to admire how you embrace your life and all the opportunities it provides you. Have fun on this new adventure.
Suzanne: Thank you for your comment. From what I see of you and your family, that appears to be very much the philosophy in your home as well.
Hi Richard
I clicked the Alumini Live 365 and saw your name. Congrats on your new position. How are things on the advisory board?? (Should I think of returning to University?)

John: How nice to hear from you! Work at the Centre for Continuing Education is fascinating and inspiring. Absolutely, you and everyone you know should register for a course or two. McGill’s an amazing institution and we’re very lucky to have it here.
Will contact you via e-mail to catch up and see how you and your family are.
