IBM’s Orientation Trail in Second Life

by Tom Werner on January 8, 2008

IBM’s Orientation Trail in Second LifeIBM has a nice Orientation Trail on Second Life skills for newcomers (SLurl).

You click on each of the objects around a fountain (see snapshot) for a notecard.

The notecards cover skills such as communication, appearance, camera, inventory, flying, and so forth.

Each notecard summarizes the basics of that topic and has a little exercise.

I’ve been stumbling my way around Second Life fairly successfully but I learned something useful at each of the objects.

For example, to save your default avatar appearance, right-click on your avatar, click on Make Outfit, type a title under Folder name (such as MyAvatar), check everything except Rename Folder to Clothing Name, and click Save. This folder will now appear under Clothing in your Inventory. Now if you experiment with different avatars or clothes, you can return to your old avatar self by simply dragging this folder onto your avatar.

Hi Tom,

Glad you fond the orientation trail useful. The idea of the trail is that it can be set up right next to events that are likely to attract beginners, for those who are so keen to get started with their Second Lives that they skip the Linden orientation! I’ve been working on a follow on trail to help people start building in Second Life. http://jtlog.wordpress.com/2007/12/12/simple-second-life-building-exercise/ It’s still available in the IBM sandbox- any comments or suggestions appreciated.

James
